Iwata Evaporative Cooler

I bought my Iwata evaporative cooler, summer of last year, so this is a product review after one year or so of use.

First of all, after one year, my evaporative cooler is still working. I had been warned by some people that these coolers are fragile gizmos, prone to breakage and malfunction. Mine is working perfectly after one year use.

But do evaporative coolers work in the first place? Yes and no. If you are looking for an air conditioner, air coolers are definitely NOT the way to go. But if you are looking for a cheap way to cool off without having to pay the high price of electricity of an AC unit, you have to lower your expectations. My evaporative cooler is on the higher-end of the spectrum at around 6K Php but still, in no way comparable to an airconditioner.

But better than a fan at least? Definitely so. Just using unchilled water straight from the faucet will lower the temperature of the air being blown by the cooler to around 28 degrees Celsius. If you add 2 pieces of the 3 peso ice blocks you can buy from the sari-sari store, and the temperature will drop to as low as 22 degrees for about 3 hours depending on how hot the ambient temperature is.

So summertime, before going to bed, I load up my cooler with water and  2 to 3 pieces of  sari-sari store ice, then I am set for the night. By the time the ice effect is lost, it would be around 11 pm at night and the ambient temperature will be cool enough anyway. So yeah, it is a pretty good appliance if you ask me. Just know what you are buying -- it is NOT an air conditioner, it is rather inconvenient loading the thing with water and ice, and electric consumption is comparable to running two traditional electric fans.

  1. I bought my Iwata Evaporative Cooler just two days ago, and yes true to what you said, it cools down the temperature. But if one is used to having the cooling effect of aircondition, you won't be satisfied with this. But my Iwata Evaporative Cooler Fan serves me well and hope it last like Don Dee's and more. It even has an Ion Effect that cleans the air. I bought mine for around P3,695.00 at Pure Gold. And considering that SM Dept Store uses those big Iwata fan made me decide to trust this brand. So, I guess, hope it will last me many years.

  2. What model is your Iwata Air Cooler? Got mine for 5k+ and the model is CM-13EC-05.

I tried to put in 1pc Ice pack that came with the unit pero ang pinaka mababang temp na nakuha ko is 29C. will try to check if adding more ICE (LOL) will make the temperature lower.

  3. At the back of my Iwata, the only label I can see is "Turbo". It's a year-old model, I don't see them in stores anymore. 29 C, with 1 ice and with yesterday's heat wave seems about right. Mine, with 2 ice bricks, comes down to 26C for about an hour, then goes back to 28. It stays at 28 the entire night -- which is a lot better than 34C (if I used only a fan) -- I know the temp readings because my Iwata has a temparature display.

  4. Is it advisable to use these Air coolers with aircon units?

Like starting 5PM to 12AM for using the aircooler in a room with the windows open then use the A/C after midnight maybe 3hrs and aircooler is in fan mode.

I've read that aircoolers need open windows so I can't use it together with the A/C.

  5. It is advised to keep open windows with air coolers because it works on the theory that evaporation of water requires heat, and therefore, results in cooler temperature. However, evaporation will become harder and harder in a closed room wherein the relative humidity can be saturated after some time operating an evaporative cooler -- which is the complete opposite of airconditioners (which results in the dry lips syndrome). So I believe the two would even out. AC units will take out the moisture in the air of a room, while the evaporative cooler will add to it.

    1. Does that mean I can use both of them at the same time? Or is my plan mentioned above more advisable.

  6. Use the air cooler after using the AC. The AC would have lowered the humidity in the room enough for the air cooler to work even with the windows closed. But take note that the air cooler will become less effective the longer it runs with windows closed because humidity will eventually increase.

  7. I bought an iwata aircooler yesterday. I have loaded a lot of water and ice in it but still there's no didference when it's in cool or fan mode. I'm not sure if mine is broken. Is the difference really noticeable? Thanks!

  8. Air cooler works best outdoors. But it can also be used indoors. It's better if you put ice together with water, especially during summer. For Iwata Aircooler rental sms/call: 09264710183 free deliver and set up in selected areas

  9. My mom bought an iwata air cooler the other day. I've pressed the "cool" button a few times but it always gives us the same response. It blinks after a while and makes an alarm sound. Is our unit defective?

  11. We use fans during the day and aircon for 2 hrs only (if needed) at bedtime. I have considered these systems, but agree that they are most effective in open area situations (al fresco restaurants being a prime example). IMVHO fans are the best option, I dont like aircom much due to the drying out effect.

  25. like all evaporative air coolers this one works by cooling the air through evaporation. Unfortunately, when it does it also introduces a lot of humidity into the air. You can get good results some as high as good as 6-8 degrees Celsius below ambient as long as you maintain air circulation. Unlike an airconditioner that cools the air without increasing humidity. Once the relative humidity in the room reaches a certain level, no cooling effect is produced. This is why this cooling method needs to part of an integrated approach to cooling and heat management. One needs to continuously circulate air so humidity does not build up (hence an exhaust fan or exhaust system), as well window insulation (not curtains) even better window and roof insulation is essential to prevent sunlight from heating air inside a room. Humid air heated by the sun is as bad if not worse than hot air from outside. I tried to implement this locally in my house in Marikina and I have achieved results cooling as much as 8 degrees below ambient. I hope this helps with anyone planning to use this form of cooling.

  28. Please read this. Evaporative coolers work on the principle that evaporation uses energy. The energy is taken from the air, and the air temperature goes down. The air should be dry (not humid). As humidity increases, the rate of evaporation will decrease. Have you ever gotten stuck inside an MRT with no aircon? No matter how much you fan yourself, your skin remains sweaty because your sweat cannot evaporate. The closed train compartment is very humid, the air can no longer absorb more water. No evaporation, no cooling effect on the skin. Your body temperature increases because the skin cannot cool you down. So you see, the temperature does not matter, only the humidity. No evaporation, no cooling effect. Closed or open windows? If it is more humid outside, don't open the window. Yes, you can lower your aircon bill if you use an evaporative cooler at the same time. The aircon lowers humidity in the room. As the air goes thru the aircon, the water vapor in the air condenses and becomes water again. This is the same principle that produces rain. Water vapor becomes clouds, the clouds turn to rain if they get cold enough to condense. That is why aircons drip water (even the no-drip models, the no-drip models just reuse the water and spray them on the evaporator, which helps save more power). Distilled water is made by boiling water and producing steam, and the steam is cooled down to return it back to liquid state. Impurities are left behind. The aircon will keep the air humidity low enough for the evaporative cooler to continuously provide a cooling effect. No, the evaporative cooler will not be as good as the aircon. But it will reduce the load on the aircon, and the cost of cooling the air using evaporative cooling is cheaper than refrigerant cooling used by the aircon. Air in the room will come into contact with walls and ceilings and windows, and you will use more electricity if you do not have insulation or curtains or blinds to keep the sun and heat out. You will save a lot by simply buying insulation and installing them in your ceiling or right under the roof. Misting fans and similar machines that atomize water are not recommended indoors. Unless you use distilled water, misters and similar spray fans and ionizers will send the impurities into the air and you will be able to inhale them. These impurities will also damage home electronics and deposit dust-like residue everywhere. If you are sensitive to dry air, use an evaporative cooler instead of a misting humidifier or ionizer. The impurities are left behind during evaporation.

  30. We bought an iwata ecool 15a and I don't know the purpose of the plastic panel at the back of the vertical swing blades. The fan inside seems to work only for the w topmost horizontal blades but the air cooler has like 9 blades. Does anyone know what's the purpose of this "thin blockage" behind the blades? There's no air coming out on the bottom part of the cooler.
